Lawn Fertilization
Lawn aeration can be a very beneficial piece of the lawncare puzzle, and one that is often overlooked. Some lawns benefit from yearly aeration, whereas others will only need it every 2-3 years. In any case, if you haven’t aerated anytime recently, chances are you’re well overdue and will result in a notable improvement to your lawn.

What Does Aeration Do?
The top layer on your lawn consists of highly-compacted soil. This happens from walking on it, but also occurs due to dead grass, rainwater, and other things helping to compact the soil over time. The soil near the top is a lot more dense, which makes it harder for air and nutrients to reach the roots of your grass, which is why the aeration process can be so beneficial.
Do I Need to Leave the Plugs on my Lawn After Aeration?
After having your lawn aerated, you’ll notice all of these little plugs laying around. The aeration process digs these up to allow your lawn to breath. You can leave them where they are, they’ll break down and decompose in time. There are a couple of other styles of aeration that don’t leave plugs at all.
3 Types of Lawn Aeration Methods
Slicing aerators
This is a very basic type of aerator, it doesn’t take a highly specialized machine, so it’s more commonly seen among DIY people and hobbyists, and it doesn’t do as good of a job as a plug aerator.
Spike aerators
This type of aerator uses little spikes that dig into the ground and get pulled out. Unlike plug aerators, they don’t leave little plugs behind, so they don’t do as good of a job at opening up your lawn to breathe.
Plug aerators
These are also referred to as core aerators, and these are a preferred method among professionals. This is the type of aerator we’re discussing throughout this page.
